The Titanic

One of the most famous but short lived ocean liners, the Titanic was built in Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast which stands in modern day Northern Ireland though the ones who commissioned it white star line were based in Liverpool which is why it had had Liverpool on its stern which is the back of the ship.

It was supposed to dock in New York with stops in Southampton in England, Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh in Ireland) but it hit an iceberg, gashed open its side and sank, taking 1,500 people down with it into the freezing Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912. Those who survived were rescued by the Carpathia.

While the famous James Cameron film of the sinking did include a Hollywood movie exclusive couple, the Titanic did in fact have a tragic romance story of its own. That of Macy's owners Ida and Isidor Straus who went down with the ship instead of being separated due to the women and children first policy. They are the old couple you see on the bed as the ship sinks.
