The Breakup of Yugoslavia

During Josip Broz Tito’s lifetime, there were little to no ethnic tensions but in the years following his death, anti-communist revolutions in Europe and the later dissolved Soviet Union led to the break-up of Yugoslavia. In 1991, Slovenia and Croatia were the first to become independent following independence referendums in December 1990 (Slovenia) and May 1991 (Croatia) which resulted in the 10-day war and the Croatian war of Independence. Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia also held successful independence referendums. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was eventually dissolved on 28 April 1992. During the Yugoslav wars and until 2006, Serbia and Montenegro were the only countries part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which in 2003 was renamed to Serbia and Montenegro. In 2006, Montenegro became independent of Serbia, rendering Yugoslavia as a whole dissolved.
