How the US stole Hawaii
Hawaii, known for hula dancers, the birthplace of Barack Obama and the location of Pearl Harbour was once at one time in history independent. Now it is the 50th US state so what happened?
Frist inhabited by Polynesian voyagers in the 8th century, the first American traders arrived in Hawaii in the early 18th century to exploit the islands' sandalwood. Sandalwood is a type of wood that has a fragrance that can last a long time! At that time, sandalwood was valuable in China.
It wasn't until the 1830s kicked in was when things really got into gear with the introduction of sugar and by the mid-19th century, Hawaii became well established. However, 1840 saw the establishment of a constitutional monarchy (where parliament has the majority of power) and thus the Hawaiian monarch had lost much of his authority. Pearl Harbour (the future location of the Pearl Harbour attack) was established in 1887).
In 1891, Liliuokalani (composer of Aloha 'Oe) became Queen of Hawaii but she was also the last monarch of Hawaii. Liliuokalani did not like where her kingdom was heading and tried with all her might to stop something that was inevitable by that point. The Hawaiians also didn't like the idea of annexing. In 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii was replaced with the Republic of Hawaii but within two years it was annexed by the United States as formal US Territory. In 1959, Hawaii entered the United States as the 50th state.
