Holi Festival
Every year, Hinduists have a festival called Holi which celebrates love, colours and spring. The festival celebrates the beginning of spring and it celebrates new life and love. It starts on the last full moon of the lunar month and lasts for two days and celebrates the Hindu god Krishna and the legend of Holika and Prahlad. When Krishna was a boy, he threw coloured water at people which is where the coloured powder throwing comes from. Every year, huge crowd gather in the street and throw paint at each other. On the first day of Holi, people light bonfires and eat special food. The paint throwing takes place on the second day. Not only that but people of all backgrounds get involved in the fun and families get a chance to play tricks on each other. Some people also throw water balloons and squirt water at each other with water posters so Holi is one of the only times that children are encouraged to get dirty albeit for fun. There are also bonfires for people to roast chickpeas on them. Popcorn and coconuts as well as special food are also consumed at Holi and presents are also given.
