Why is Black History Month in February?

It originally began as Black History Week by Dr Carter G Woodson who created BHW because black (as in of African descent) youth were not being taught their true history in elementary (primary) and secondary schools. Black History was originally celebrated during the 2nd week of February because Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington celebrated their birthdays in February and at that time, the most important events concerning black people had occurred in February. With the support of President Gerald Ford, Black History Week became Black History Month in 1976.
