The head of Destalinization and known for the Cuban Missile Crisis that almost kick-started a Third World War, Nikita Khrushchev was born in 1894 in a village near the modern day Russian-Ukrainian border but in 1908, he and his family moved to Ukraine where he would identify himself. The First World War swiped his dream of becoming an engineer and following the fall of the Romanovs, he joined the Red Army and also got into the communism politics. After a move to Moscow (initially to study metallurgy (technology and science of metals), he was put in charge of constructing subway having built a power base beforehand.
He dodged being killed the Great Purge despite his prosperity for being, we kid you not, for being rather goofy. Standing at 5 foot 2, Khrushchev looked like a Ukrainian village idiot, drank like a fish, would perform a funny dance for Joseph Stalin at his request for party leaders and was regarded as a total joke. So while he was doing professional things, if he had been living in the 21st century, he would've been the punchline of many jokes on social media. He benefitted from surviving the Great Purge.
When Stalin died and a succession crisis resulted in the de facto First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Georgy Malenkov resigned, the USSR saw Khrushchev become leader of the Soviet Union. Playtime for Khrushchev was over. One of three things he is well known for is the Secret Speech which led to Destalinization, his infamous "we will bury you" speech which has been misinterpreted as a threat and should really translate from Russian to English as to attend one's funeral or to outlive someone and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In a nutshell, the Soviets had nuclear weapons in Cuba (which was spotted by an American spy plane) and the US had nuclear weapons in Turkey which would devastate life on Earth! War seemed to be on the horizon but eventually after 14 days, the two agree to withdraw their atomic weapons from their posts.
Combining all that with the Sino Soviet Split, botched agriculture plans and an incident involving Khrushchev slipping back into his clowning days by banging his shoe against a table, Khrushchev was forced to resign in 1964, shunted into anonymity, being barred from a grand funeral and burial at the Kremlin Wall. So what happened to his remains? They were buried in a simple atheist ceremony in Novodevichy Cemetery where Raisa Gorbachev (Mikhail Gorbachev's wife) and Boris Yeltson now rest.
