How Putin came to power
So, you're probably wondering how Vladimir Putin came to power?
Let's look into that today, shall we?
The only child to a decorated war veteran and factory worker, Vladimir Putin entered the world in 1952 in the city of Leningrad (now St Petersburg). Vladimir grew up in a typical Soviet style communal block with two other families and as a child, loved spy TV shows and novels which influenced him to study law at Leningrad State University and spent 17 years working in foreign intelligence. The experience he had with the experts were a defining moment in his life.
Putin was in East Germany when the Berlin Wall fell which caused him to think that it was the end of the world which tells you a lot about his political views.
Vladimir was part of the KGB until 1991 when he officially resigned from active reserve and worked for St Petersburg's first democratic mayor, his former law professor Anatoly Sobchak who Putin was loyal to. He turned down the mayoral position when Sobchak wasn't re-elected. Both men had authoritarian tendencies. Authoritarian means that a person like Putin means that they favour a concentration of power in a leader (like Putin or another authoritarian) or an elite not constitutionally responsible to the people. In 1996, he and his family moved to Moscow and in August 1999, he became Prime Minister of Russia after being appointed by Russia's first president Boris Yeltsin. Within a span of a few months, Vladimir was President of Russia. He wasn't always Russia's president as in 2008, he became prime minister by Russia's third president Dmitry Medvedev but in 2012, Putin was back at the top. As of December 2021, he is currently doing his 4th term at 69-years-old.
