Anna Politkovskaya

When it comes to murdered journalists, Ireland had Veronica Guerin and Russia had Anna Politkovskaya. Anna told the world through her writing what was really going on in Chechnya, a port of Russia, a part of Russia that wanted to be independent, the Russian government didn't like the idea of losing Chechnya and sent in troops to the area and a brutal war began.
The Russian government didn't like Anna's reporting either but Anna wouldn't back down! "Risk is part of my profession" she told her husband "I know something may happen to me. I just want my articles to make the world better".
There were many attempts to stop her by the Russian Security Services but she bravely carried on, telling the truth about everything she saw. That was until 7 October 2006. Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated on Vladimir Putin's 54th birthday and was buried in Troyekurovo Cemetery on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia.
