St Gertrude of Nivelles, the patron saint of cats

St Patrick isn't the only saint whose feast day falls on 17 March because there is also the Patron saint of cats, St Gertrude of Nivelles.
In 626, Gertrude was born in Nivelles, which is now a part of Belgium. Under successive Frankish kings, her father, Pepin I, was the mayor of the Austrian palace. It was thought that Itta, her mother, was the Metz bishop's daughter. King Dagobert proposed to Gertrude when she was just ten years old, asking her to wed the duke's son. With a forceful refusal, she said that Christ alone would be her husband. In layperson terms, she said "I'm not marrying you or anyone else, I'm going to be single to everyone else except Jesus!"
Itta, Gertrude's mother, constructed a male-only and female-only monastery in Nivelles following the passing of her father. After assuming the role of abbess at the women's convent, Gertrude committed her life to education, devotion, and serving others. As abbess, Gertrude delegated management to dependable nuns and monks so she could concentrate on her studies of scripture and service to the underprivileged. She constructed hospices, churches, and monasteries with the land she acquired.

It is common to see Gertrude holding a cat and that is because She is revered as the patron saint of felines and is sometimes referred to as the Catholic Church's "cat lady." She got that patronage out of her ability to expel mice from dwellings which is what cats were for back then and now (when not being used in funny internet videos of them or relaxing videos of them).
Gertrude died on 17 March 659 in Nivelles which is now in modern day Belgium.
Gertrude was a living example of kindness, selflessness, and commitment to God. She embodied the Christian qualities of compassion and generosity by providing care for the sick, old, impoverished, and travelers. Through her sister Begga, she is an ancestor of King of the Franks, Charlemagne who was her great-great- great nephew.
