Ferdinand Marcos
Ferdinand Marcos instated martial law in September 1972 after serving 2 terms (each containing 4 years) as President of the Philippines and he had a 20 year regime. During his time as president, or should we say dictator of the Philippines, he was responsible for multiple human rights violations, extravagant personal spending of government money and corruption that the country has yet to recover from. The military under Marcos' command was responsible for killing over 3,000 people, torturing 35,000 people and arresting 70,000 people, all to uphold his absolute control on the country. He raised the foreign debt from $2.7 billion in 1972 to $28.8 billion in 1986. While everyone struggled, the Marcos family lived in luxury. His wife, Imelda is known to have a massive collection of shoes! Marcos was overthrown in 1986 after an anti-Marcos politician was killed which led to 4 days of protests.
He fled to Hawaii where he died in Sept 1989 and his body (ooh boy!) was embalmed and placed in a glass top refrigerated casket at Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe, Oahu (the hometown of Caitlin Doughty of Ask A Mortician fame) with Handel's Messiah playing inside of it 24/7. He was there for 4 years before he was brought back to the Philippines and was on display with Mozart playing this time round. Despite opposition and fraudulent claims of taking part in fighting against Japanese occupation during World War 2, Ferdinand Marcos was buried in the Heroes' Cemetery in Manila, Philippines in 2016.
In 2004, Marcos was named the second most corrupt leader of all time by corruption watchdog group, Transparency International.
