Josip Broz Tito
Tito was involved in both World Wars but only rose to power during the Second World War during Yugoslavia's occupation under fascist control. He was a communist leader and formed a resistance group called the Partisans which successfully drove the Nazis out of Yugoslavia.
Following the war, Tito not only became marshal but also president for life of Yugoslavia. He threatened Stalin's life after his request for his intelligence agency to be in Yugoslavia was denied which caused Stalin to send assassins to kill Tito. The threat? In his own words in a letter to Stalin that Stalin later framed "If you don't stop sending killers, I'll send a very fast working one to Moscow and I certainly won't have to send another”.

Non-Aligned Movement with other nations as part of Yugoslavia's cold war neutrality. He erased wartime memories in an effort to suppress religion and nationalism and forced Serbs and Croats to be together in one nation, Yugoslavia which resulted in ethnic tensions within a decade after his death.
Tito succumbed to gangrene despite accepting a leg amputation on 4th May 1980. Despite all he did, Croats loved him.
