Croatian War of Independence

In the early 1990s, as the Iron Curtain and Communism in Europe crumbled, Croatia decided to break free from Yugoslavia as did Slovenia. Serbia opposed of the successful impendence referendums as did Serbs living in Croatia and decided to take armed action against Croatia. The result was the 10 day war and the Croatian War of Independence. This led to sieges at Vukovar and Dubrovnik and despite a ceasefire in early 1992, the war wouldn't officially end until August 1995. By then, 300,000 were displaced while 15,007 were killed which includes soldiers and civilians. The country's flag and currency (as of 2020), the kuna were established. Croatian Independence day is commemorated on 8 October.
