D-Day Invasion in Normandy (6 June 1944)

D-Day happened on 6th June 1944 and was the retaking of western Europe from the Nazis. The Germans had built powerful defences along the Atlantic coast called the Atlantic Wall. The allies decided to attack 5 beaches in Normandy, France. The 5 beaches' codenames were called Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The soldiers most involved were American, British and Canadian. This was the largest sea invasion in history. The Allies suffered huge losses but they managed to get a foothold in Europe. From this point, they managed to retake Western Europe from the Germans.
