Normallstrog Bank Robbery/ Birth of Stockholm Syndrome

On 23 August 1973, a bank robbery occurred at the Norrmalstorg square in Stockholm, Sweden. Jan-Erik Olsson attempted to rob it while on leave from prison and he held four employees at the bank he was robbing, the Sveriges Kreditbank, hostage. While this was the first criminal event in Swedish history to be covered on television from 23rd until 28th August 1973 when Olsson surrendered after police used tear gas, it also led to the creation of Stockholm Syndrome. According to psychologists and Psychiatrists, this unofficial psychological diagnosis, people with Stockholm Syndrome experience positive feelings for their captor. In the case of the Normalmstorg bank robbery, the hostages berated the police for threatening to harm the robbers and they even wrote letters to the robbers who were in jail as well as helping the robbers raise money to hire defence lawyers.
