Francisco Franco

Francisco Franco came to power following the Spanish Civil War. He represented conservative, royalist and catholic sections of society. For those sectors, life under Franco was good. For those who opposed him like socialists, minorities, democrats, Regionals (Basque or Catalans etc) Franco was very repressive. People who disagreed with him were harassed by the police and often jailed. Marches were banned and people like this found it harder to get work. The regime controlled and produced material for radio, cinema and later TV. Anything that questioned the values of church, state or tradition was banned. Life was dull because of the restrictions on arts and entertainment. Schools - focused on religious values and education was poor. Most children attended church schools which were reserved for the poor and were in very poor quality and from 1939 to 1953. During Franco's 40 years in power, the Spanish economy remained backward except for tourism. Here, jobs were poorly paid. There was a ban on trade union strikes.
Spain was a cultural desert and was isolated from its neighbours and thus it didn't receive much from the Marshall Plan. Some Spaniards would tell you that Franco's Spain was great while most Spaniards will tell you otherwise. Franco's neutral but solidarity alliance to Hitler is the reason why Spain's time zone is Central European Time instead of Greenwich Meantime which occurred in 1942 and as of October 2020 has remained that way since.
Shocked at the abdication of the Spanish king in 1931, Franco decided in the years leading up to his passing that Juan Carlos would succeed him as King of Spain because he believed a Bourbon prince that was raised under this tutelage could continue to support and enforce a traditionalist state. What ended up happening was that upon Franco's 1975 death, King Juan Carlos ended up bringing democracy back to Spain. By then, Equatorial Guinea had been freed from colonial rule since 1968.

Franco's corpse shares a similar story to that of Ferdinand Marcos, that being of how they were laid to rest. Franco was originally buried in a lavish tomb in the Valley of the Fallen but was moved to Mingorrubio Cemetery in October 2019 as the Valley of the Fallen was also the final resting place to those who died in the civil war so having his followers visit his grave was disrespectful to the families of the deceased there. Despite many attempts made by his family to stop the exhumation, the Spanish government did it so they could move to eradicating the glorification of the dictatorship.

Emilano of Spain is cleaning the Spanish crown as a man announces on the TV "Espanioles, Franco, ha muerto" which is Spanish for "Spaniards, Franco has died".
