Holodomor

During his time as Soviet Leader, Joseph Stalin was ambitious into the Soviet Union into a super power but in order to feed the cities, he forced peasant farmers to give up their land for industrialised farming. Frustrated at this, Ukrainian farmers retaliated but in response they were blacklisted from receiving supplies by the Soviet government. As a result many Ukrainians starved to death with as many as 3.5 million if not 12 million dying of starvation from 1932 to 1933. Those in urban areas had to use ration cards and mass graves were dug out in the countryside. This event, often called Holodmor (Holod being the Ukrainian word for hunger and mor being the Ukrainian word for plague) is a key part of Ukrainian history and the dead are remembered every year on 28 November.
