It all started with the end of Opium wars in the 19th Century when Hong Kong was leased to Britian under the condition that it would be under British rule for 99 years. So when 1997 rolled in, Britain handed back the very democratic Hong Kong to the now communist China. This of course angered Hong Kong citizens and in recent times, they are now protesting against China because China wants to remove democracy from Hong Kong.
