Benito Mussolini

A one-time journalist, socialist and soldier, Benito Mussolini became an ultra-nationalist following the March on Rome in 1922. He and his Blackshirts were rewarded by the King Victor Emmanuel III who made Mussolini prime minister.
With that power, Mussolini removed opposition and created a one party dictatorship where he was addressed as "Il Duce".
His Fascism ideology provided the model for Hitler in Germany and Franco in Spain.
This is what he did in attempt to make Italy better but actually botched most of them except for the Lateran Treaty 1929 which was a success as it made the Vatican independent:

  • Battle for Lands: land reclamation which also provided employment. Battle for Lira: evaluating the currency in Italy.
  • Battle for Grain: a move towards autarky (self-efficiency).
  • Battle for Births: he encouraged women to have more children. The late wrestler and former portrayer for the iconic Nintendo character Super Mario, Captain Lou Albano was born during Mussolini's regime where his father (Lou's dad) was pursued his studies for a medical degree at the University of Bari. Lou was later baptised in the Vatican before his parents brought him to America.

One good thing Mussolini died other than the aforementioned Lateran Treaty was engaging in public construction programmes like the Auto Stratus.

Mussolini signed the Rome-Berlin Axis with Hitler which later became the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis when Japan joined. He had Italy enter the Second World War following the fall of the Third French Republic (France). However Italy switched side to the Allies and the King sacked Mussolini. As a result of this Hitler and Mussolini set up a puppet state named the Italian Social Republic. This however lasted only 2 years and on 28th April 1945, Mussolini was killed by Italian partisans and his corpse alongside his mistress Clara were hung upside down at a petrol station in Milan.
