Hungarian Independence
October 1918, the last emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Charles the 1st appointed Count Michael Karolyi as prime minister of Hungary. In November 1918, the emperor abdicated and the empire collapsed. Karolyi declared Hungary independent. Other parts of the former empire (Czechs and Romanians) also declared independence. Communists under Bela Kun seized power in Hungary and fought the Romanians. July 1919: Admiral Horthy seized power. Under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, the borders of modern Hungary were established.
