Assassination of Olof Palme

On 28 February 1986 at 11:21PM Central Eastern Time, Sweden's Prime Minister Olof Palme was shot after a visit to the Grande Cinema in Stockholm, Sweden. Although his wife was also shot, she would outlive him. Olof was pronounced dead at 12:06AM on 1st March 1986 at the age of 59 and it took until 1:10AM for the first news report about his murder to air on radio with the first televised broadcast airing at 4:00AM. At the time of his death, political violence in Sweden was unheard of. Ingvar Carlsson became Sweden's prime minister following Palme's death and he held the position until 1991. Although Olof was an atheist (he didn't believe in a god or religion), a Lutheran priest conducted his private burial in Stockholm's Adolf Fredrik cemetery.
