The Day the Music Died

The Day the Music died is a term used to describe the deaths of musicians Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper who perished in a plane crash caused by pilot error and bad weather on 3rd February 1959. The men were touring the northern part of the United States as part of their Winter Dance Party tour and were supposed to land in North Dakota for their next gig. It is due to the trauma Buddy Holly’s widow experience following her husband’s death that a policy was created which prevents a victim’s name being publicly announced until after the family has been notified. Perhaps you have heard of the Don McLean song American Pie which is about the crash. One of Buddy Holly’s songs “True Love Ways” was used in several ads for Panda Cheese, an Egyptian cheese brand which has an agitated panda ruin the day of those who refused to purchase, use or consume the product.
