What happened to the Carpathia after the sinking of the Titanic?
Owned by Cunard, the same ship company that owned the Lusitania, the RMS Carpathia is known in history for rescuing the survivors of the sunken Titanic which was owned by Cunard's rival White Star Line in April 1912.
So what happened to it after the sinking of the Titanic?
Well, much like the Lusitania, the Carpathia (which got its name from the Carpathian mountain range) was also sunk by a German U-boat. The ship was heading to Boston from Liverpool on 17 July 1918 when the No. 3 hatch on the port side was hit by a torpedo after one was sighted at 9:15AM. By 11:00AM, the Carpathia sank, taking with it 5 crewmen. The wreck is approximately 120mi (190km) west of Fastnet lighthouse, the most southerly point of Ireland as it lies 13 kilometres (8.1 miles) from County Cork, Ireland.
