SQL Slammer Worm
It was 25th January 2003 and everything seems to be like a normal day and during that time but then prior to 6 a.m. the internet broke! how broken you may ask? South Korea had no internet or cell service, 300, 000 Portuguese were unable to connect to the internet, bank ATMs went down and 911 in Seattle had to log calls on paper. To top it off Airlines timetable to process tickets and had to cancel flights and also, those that were still connected had very slow connections, even by 2003 standards. What was the source of all these malfunction a computer virus called SQL Slammer. Oh yes, it does sound like a cool wrestler name but this virus was far than cool.
The virus worked like this, SQL Slammer would take advantage of a piece of Microsoft code called Microsoft SQL. This is important as the Microsoft SQL helps SQL servers process requests given by a user and these servers have the databases to fulfill their requests. After taking advantage of Microsoft SQL, Slammer would take advantage of the system by sending out a specially-formatted piece of code that seems harmless like a request for information but reprogrammed the server to send more copies of the same worm. This worm spread is rapid faster than any other players before 75, 000 servers in just under 10 minutes. Millions of the affected leaving people to act like it was 1985 for a while with the internet temporarily kaput.
It is believed that the SQL slammer virus to have caused at least 1.2 billion dollars in damages before it was stopped and the perpetrator got away scot free. This could've all been avoided 6 months back when Microsoft released a patch fix for the bug that Slammer ended up exploiting but since it wasn't supposed to be corrupted, not a lot of people had the patch update installed when disaster occurred. Coincidentally, just 4 days before this happened, the Yahoo server for the Homestar Runner website became overloaded and crashed, leaving the fun site full of cartoons and games offline for a brief period too!
