Hotel New World collapse

On 15 March 1986, the Lian Yak building in Singapore that housed a bank, a nightclub and a hotel hence its historical name of the Hotel New World, collapsed at 11:25AM. 33 people were killed and 17 were injured. The building's collapse which can be compared to that of a collapsing house of cards was caused by construction error. An unqualified draftsman was hired to design the building instead of a professional structural engineer. The draftsman had overestimated the dead weight which the columns and walls could support. The Hotel New World collapse was Singapore's deadliest disaster since the Spyros disaster of 1978.
