Captain James Cook vs. Hawaii
Captain James Cook, sailor turned captain is responsible for how people in an age before satellites know what the Pacific looks like. He mapped Pacific and the coast of Australia which paved the way for the colonializing of Australia and the near destruction of the island's indigenous population, introduced sheep to Australia as well as debunking a marine passageway up in North America. He also mapped out New Zealand. Cook was also the first European to describe Hawaii while his ship's crew members' vitamin C levels up thus preventing scurvy. Cook went on 3 voyages, all of which involved him mapping out the Pacific Ocean and the land masses. His third trip however, ended badly. Let's talk about that little trip to pre American takeover Hawaii, shall we?
On the first visit to Hawaii in January 1778, the Englishmen were seen as supernatural immortals by the Hawaiians but when Captain Cook finished mapping the west coast of North America, he returned to Hawaii for some ship repairs. The Hawaiians had been duped! Gods would never have trouble at sea with their ships. Agitated, the Hawaiians stole some stuff from Cook's crew which annoyed them to say the least. So in an attempt to get their revenge Captain Cook also tried to kidnap their king. Things only got worse after one of Cook's men killed a kid which saw all bad place break loose. During the conflict, Cook was killed on 14 February 1779! Despite the aggression, the Hawaiians decided to make up for the brawl by giving a portion of James Cooke's remains to the Englishmen after cremating him in Hawaiian funeral traditions.
