Mr. Rogers and the Death of John Lennon
Following the death of musician John Lennon, Fred McFeeley Rogers who hosted a show for children entitled "Mr Rogers' Neighbourhood”, decided to handle the difficult subject of violence, specifically gun violence. Starting the episode off by strongly but gently encouraging the viewer to get a grown up to watch the show with them, Mr Rogers informed the children that violence is not the solution to their anger and behavioural problems and to not bottle up their feelings either. As well as stating how he is agitated by “people hurting other people”, he uttered one of his most famous quotes: "When I was a boy and I would hear scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping".
Oddly enough, this episode of his show has rarely been seen since.
