History of Autism

Autism, a developmental disorder that doctors and psychiatrists characterize with social interaction difficulties and repetitive behavioural problems which can be mild (like Asperger Syndrome) or severe which results in some not being able to talk at all was first considered similar to schizophrenia (a mental illness that doctors and psychiatrists characterize with disorganised thinking and hallucinations) by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler but it wasn't until 1943 when Austrian doctor Dr Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger realised that it wasn't schizophrenia but instead a developmental disorder. As it is intrusive, Autism has only started being portrayed in the media in recent years with a puppet character named Julia being introduced. An example of someone who is on the Autism Spectrum is Temple Grandin, a professor of animal science. World Autism Acceptance Day is celebrated every year on 2nd April.
