Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks (born Rosa McCauley) was an African American woman who in December 1955, refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The importance of this event is because this was the start of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States which saw the desegregation of public places and facilities including public transport, drinking fountains and restaurants. Rosa was arrested but she was released on bail and what followed were peaceful protests and sit ins.
