The Baltic Way

The Baltic Way was a 600km long human chain of approximately 2 million people who joined hands in connecting the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. This was a peaceful political demonstration that happened on 23 August 1989 as part of the Baltics demonstrating their unity in their efforts towards freedom after being part of the Soviet Union since 1940. The result? It lead to not only the Soviet Union admitting to the past crimes and declaring the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact invalid but it also stimulated German reunification and the regained independence of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in 1990 and 1991.
