How did 850+ years of British control in Ireland begin?
The English first intervened with the Irish in 1169 and 1170 during the Norman Invasion. While it brought new words and surnames, it also started the 850+ year struggle the Irish have endured from Britain and by 1183 Rory O'Connor (Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair in Irish) abdicated as Ireland's last Irish king which allowed the English King Henry the Second to rule Ireland from England. By the end of Norman era Ireland, the Normans were more Irish than the Irish themselves which made the Statutes of Kilkenny useless as it tried to prevent the Normans from mixing with the Irish and their culture. Over the centuries, the English planted in Ireland, defeated them in many battles and restricted Catholics with Penal laws but they were relaxed in later years. By the time the Home Rule Bill that would've resulted in a Dublin Parliament for the first time since the 1798 rebellion was postponed due to World War 1, the Irish Nationalists' patience was wearing thin.
