Handover of Macau
Macau (or Macao) first came into existence with the arrival of Portuguese merchants in 1535 during China’s Ming Dynasty. Macau was still regarded as Portuguese territory even after the collapse of the Portuguese monarchy in 1910. The Portuguese
controlled Macau peacefully.
As part of decolonisation, and in part of resolving sovereignty issues with British controlled Hong Kong, Portugal decided alongside the People’s Republic of China to hand over Macau to China. On 20 December 1999, nearly 24 years after the withdrawal of Portuguese troops from Macau, China took over Macau.
The citizens of Macau were slightly unhappy with the handover while others were happier as the way of life didn’t change. That's why Macau hasn't fallen to riots like Hong Kong and has since blossomed into a piece of Las Vegas in the Asian continent.
