Robert Mugabe
A man who should’ve spent his final days in prison for his crimes against humanity, Robert Mugabe started out as a liberator. He liberated Zimbabwe from white-minority rule which was carried from the country’s 1980 independence from Britain.
Throughout his 37 year rule, Mugabe destroyed the economy of Zimbabweans despite improving the literacy rate of the nation through his education policy. The elections in the country were dis seated which allowed him to hold onto power longer than others. His indigenization policies and land reform policies were criticised by opposition leaders for obliterating the country’s economy and government services. Amnesty International have criticised Mugabe for his violation of human rights. The Zimbabwean economy was so bad that the money was worthless with the high economic inflation and was said to have been used as makeshift toilet paper. Mugabe was said to have lost all moral compass following the death of his first wife Sally. His 91st birthday party was a pricey 1 million dollars!
He started his 37 year rule was Prime Minister of Zimbabwe and ended it as a disgraced president.
He was overthrown in a coup d’état in 2017 and died in Singapore while being treated for a cancer like illness. He was buried in his hometown of Kutama, Zimbabwe.
Mugabe has a complicated legacy like that of Josip Broz Tito and Muammar Gaddafi, one where he is seen as a revolutionary hero and a tyrant.
