What if we told you that from 1963 until 1979, South Korea (known for K-Pop) had a dictatorship? It began on 16 May 1963 when a coup was launched by Park Chung Hee who was made President of South Korea. As you may or may not know, a coup is an illegal seizure of government so that's one reason he has been considered a dictator. Another reason why he is considered a dictator is when Chung made his term limit 3 instead of 2 terms. Park utilised oppressive measures against political rivals and the general public, had absolute control of the government, and rigged the elections. If you were to ask someone which side of the peninsula was doing better, you would be surprised to hear that North Korea was better off than the South (China changing its economic policy in the 1980s and the collapse of the USSR in 1991 changed all that). That all came to an end when he was assassinated on 26 Oct 1979 after dismissing an opposition leader which led to severe demonstrations and riots.
