The Delorean

On 24 October 1975, the Delorean Motor Company was founded by John Delorean and in 1981, the company's only car, DMC Delorean was released. Also known as the DMC-12 because the company wanted to sell the car for $12,000 had it not been for production changes that raised the price to $25,000 the DeLorean was unique as it had gull winged doors that went up instead of outwards like other cars. It was manufactured in Belfast, Northern Ireland to save production costs at a time when the government in Northern Ireland was attracting international companies like Michelin, Goodyear, DuPont, Enkalon, ICI and Courtaulds. However those who wanted jobs on the west of the River Bann for unemployed Catholics had very little knowledge on car building.
There were also constant design problems and issues with low power harnessing. As a result of the Delorean flopping in American markets and John Delorean getting caught up in a drug scandal, Delorean Motor Company closed in 1982.

While coming up with idea for the time machine during the making of the first Back To The Future, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale decided that on account of the John Delorean trial that the Delorean car would be the time machine in Back To the Future. In the 1985 film, the Delorean was powered by the nuclear substance of plutonium and if a date is put into its seven to fourteen segment displays, it would take the passenger and driver to the departure location on the date that is entered. The success of the first Back to the Future film spawned a franchise, giving the Delorean a second chance of life.
