On 26 July 1963, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Skopije, the capital of Macedonia (officially called North Macedonia as there are 3 parts of Greece called Macedonia). The earthquake occurred at 5:17AM local time and lasted 20 seconds followed by smaller aftershocks that lasted until 5:43. It was 6 kilometres deep and could mostly be felt along the Vardar River Valley. Following the quake, over 4,000 people were injured, 1,100 lives were lost and 200,000 were homeless with 75-80% of the city destroyed. Much of the city was rebuilt and today, the clock at the Old Railway Station which is now a museum is permanently stopped at 5:17, the time the earthquake began.
