Montenegrin Independence

On 21 May 2006, Montenegro held a referendum on whether to remain in a union with Serbia or become independent. 55.50% of the population voted in favour of independence while 44.50% voted no. The results were clear. The last of a Yugoslav union was to be dissolved and on 3rd June 2006, Montenegro broke free of Serbian control, peacefully unlike its neighbours Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia who had to fight for their independence at the cost of millions of lives.
