Ghanaian Independence

After World War 2, colonialism was seen as an expense and as a result, a lot of countries like India and Malaysia were granted independence. This was decolonialisation. In Africa, Ghana was the first to get independence from Britain. Ghana was part of the Gold Coast (different to what California was called in the Gold Rush years) which was a British colony. Ghana gained independence on 6 March 1957 but at first, Ghana was giving dominion status where the British monarch (in this case Queen Elizabeth II) was seen as the head of state of Ghana but that all changed in 1960 when Ghana became a republic (a president is head of state rather than a monarch) with Kwame Nkruma as the first president of Ghana.
