On the border between Montenegro and Albania lies the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula. Named after Albanian city of Shkodër, Lake Skadar is a karst lake which means it was created when a cave with a roof made of permeable rock like limestone gives way, allowing for the cave to be filled up with water. Karst comes from the Slovenian region of Karst.
The pristine lake is a fauna haven!
It is one of Europe's biggest bird reserves with 270+ birds calling the lake home including Europe's last pelicans like the Dalmatian pelicans. The 400sq km lake is also home to the freshwater snails as well as an abundant of fish like eels, carp and bleak! Like the Giant's Causeway, there is a legend regarding the lake's birth with the legend going that it was the result of pixies crying enough tears to create the dolphin shaped lake.
The area surrounding the lake is now a national park which aims to protect it from urban development since its establishment in 1983.
Birdwatchers or tourists who have heard of this beautiful lake can get a čun boat so they can see the birds.
