Mahatma Gandhi

Every 2nd October, India celebrates the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the man who helped them get their independence after several decades of British rule in India. Gandhi was born in 1869 in Gujarat as Mohandas Karamchand Ghandi. He got the name Mahatma later in his life.
He was raised through honesty and strict discipline, truthfulness and integrity. When he had misbehaved as a teenager, he wrote down his misbehaviour on a piece of paper to his father with a vow not to repeat the mistakes. It was through that emotional experience that his father reacted in a non-violent manner and revealed to him the calming and healing power that Ahimsa (non-violence) had.

When he grew up, Gandhi studied law in England and practised law in South Africa. It was in South Africa where Gandhi witnessed the racism an Indian was subjected to in South Africa where it wasn't much better for Africans in South Africa either. When he tried to argue about his 1st class ticket, he was thrown off the train and his seat was given to a white passenger. From that day on, Gandhi would use two big main principles in his life: Ahimsa: non violence
Satyagraha: truth force (never allowing violence)
When Gandhi returned to India, he told the people about his ideas and how they would help free them of British rule. Gandhi took on simple attire so he could be closer to the poor people of India during the independence movement. With the help of Jawaharlal Nehru, he got Indians to disobey British rules, boycott British products all while doing it in a peaceful and non-violent manner. He also organised a march in protest against a tax on salt. Over time, it became for the British to silence the protests as the jails were always filling up rapidly so with imperialism becoming pricey to deal with, India was partitioned and given independence. Partitioned? Well, Pakistan wanted to be independent too as long as the Muslims had the majority of the population and power. However this caused all sort of strife as the man organised to draw the borders only flew over the subcontinent once and never set foot in it at all so Indian Hindus ended up in Pakistan and Pakistani Muslims found themselves in India.
On 30 January 1948 at 5:17PM IST, 5 months after India got its independence and 2 years before it became a republic, an irate Hindu extremist shot Gandhi 3 times in the chest, killing him within a short amount of time. India mourned Gandhi whose remains were cremated in accordance with Hindu beliefs. India celebrates Gandhi's life
every 2nd October and protested when a party animal like depiction of him appeared in the adult animated series Clone High which coupled with low ratings saw it being cancelled.
