Indira Gandhi

On 31 October 1984, India's Prime Minister Indira Ghandi (no relation to Mahatma Ghandi) was assassinated before her interview with British actor Peter Ustinov by her bodyguards with their service weapons in the gardens of the Indian Prime minister's residence. The bodyguards were Sikh and at that time, Indian Sikhs were threatened due to Operation Blue Star which saw the removal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his follows from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab. Sikhs are followers of the Sikh religion which originates from Punjab and started in the 15th century CE. Indira was mourned worldwide and in accordance to Hindu tradition, her body was cremated near Raj Ghat and she was succeeded by her son Rajiv. Indira was the daughter of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
