Christmas Truce 1914

On Christmas Eve 1914 in the west of France, German troops in their World War 1 trenches began lighting candles and singing Christmas Caroles. This was followed by the British troops doing the same and many others followed as long as thier commanding officer approved. An area between the British and German lines known as No Man's Land soon became filled with brave soldiers exchanging gifts and souveniers. In a way, there was an unofficial truce as there was very little combat taking place and it seemed that the war was over at Christmas as promised. While this was a one day event as /it didn't occour again during the rest of the war. One of the most iconic images of the the event include soldiers playing soccer/ football with eachother which happened among the gift giving, carol singing and candle lighting.
